The art of Stan Rose

This week we have another featured artist from the UK, although he lives in France.

Stanley Rose is a British artist who has lived and worked in France for more than 30 years.

He has a degree in fine art painting and taught the subject for a number of years before dedicating all his time to picture making.

Stanley has won many awards in his career and is a member of the AFAS. He exhibits at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, California and at ‘Retromobile’, Paris as well as ‘The Newmasters Gallery’, Carmel, California.

He sees himself as an ‘artist who includes automobiles in his paintings’ as opposed to a ‘painter of cars’. The distinction enables Stanley to approach his art with a freedom and diversity of subject matter unique to this field.

The themes that Stanley tackles range from figures attired in 50’s costume, thoroughbred horses, motorsport and Blues musicians, all associated with the appropriate automobiles.

His most recent series of paintings have led to a limited edition series of high quality prints on ‘musicians’.

His work has appeared in numerous magazines throughout the world and recently in a luxury book ‘Stanley Rose -The Wheels of Life’ by Philippe Guyé published by Jamval Editions www.jamval.com.

Studio 66. Hot Rod Art by Gene Chambers

"A classic car, the romance of days gone by, and the scent of fresh paint on a well-worn brush – that’s the essence of life" wise words from our featured artist this week, Gene Chambers of Studio 66.

Gene was born and raised in Bountiful, Utah, the very center of the automotive universe! Not really, but maybe being so close to the
Bonneville Salt Flats is what put the allure of the hot-rod life in his soul.

The power and grace you see in his artwork is reflective of the custom car culture of the 50s and 60s.
If you've seen movies such as American Graffiti you get the idea and how people get hooked and love these amazing machines.
Gene explains: "Hot Rods are my passion, but the graphic arts are my craft. It all came together when I was a young boy".
Gene used magic markers to draw wild creatures and cars on t-shirts, and he built hundreds of model cars. His biggest inspiration was Ed “Big
Daddy” Roth. He was one of his first mentors, and many of the shirts and models Gene put together were based on Ed’s creations.

"I carry that inspiration with me to this day, and I’m proud to be included in the “Rat Fink Artist Hall of Fame” as a licensed “Official Rat
Fink Artist”", Gene commented.

A quiet day creating and painting a customized illustration is what Gene likes best. Years of using oil-based sign enamel is what has
helped him develop his unique style.

As he said himself, "I can see joy in the junk, especially if its car junk. That old rusty oil can, a well-worn toolbox, or a
door panel from a 1952 Chevy – there is magic in that metal!" ( and we agree)

He honed his skills by starting out as a billboard painter for a small sign company while studying graphic design in college. Funny thing
about painting billboards – it gives you the honor of seeing the world larger than life.

That first job led him to a gig as a designer and painter at the Lagoon Amusement Park (the Beach Boys performed there once, so did
the Rolling Stones…).

Eventually he moved on to become Art Director for Reagan Outdoor Advertising. There, he created an in-house art department that designed many of the billboards you all remember from your childhood – or – young adulthood.
He has won numerous Addy Awards and he informs us that he probably still have some of them around his garage.
For 25 years as the VP of marketing, he was instrumental in helping Vision Graphics be recognized as one of the world’s leading producers of large format graphics.
They managed to do graphics for events large and small, from festivals to sporting events (ever hear of the NFL SUPER BOWL? Winter Olympics maybe?).
According to Gene he still has the ability to see larger than life, the skill needed for that type of graphic work.
His artwork has been in several publications: “Pinstriping and Kustom Graphics Magazine”, “The Rolling Bones Book
of GOW” (Gas Oil & Water), Including an Australian hot rod magazine “Cruzin”.

Gene was recently inducted into the 2018 “Utah Hot Rod Hall of Fame".
