Dave Wishart

The interest in pencil drawing has been with Dave since childhood, but a demanding career on the railroad, a family, and life in general has always gotten in the way of doing artwork for much more than simple enjoyment. 35 years on the rails will come to a close in the near future, and with that in mind, Dave has been digging back into his art for the last couple of years with a much more serious intent. Primarily self taught, he is continually studying the work and techniques of automotive artists from around the world, and is always looking for ways to make improvements in all areas of his presentation work, and hence, there will be no more 10 year lapses in art projects.

As a pre-teen kid on the Canadian Prairies, the muscle car and hotrod scene was in full swing, and like most young boys, anything with wheels that made noise was an attraction. Connecting his long held interest in cars and motorcycles with the need to represent them on paper has brought us where we are today.

Simple, but highly detailed images are what Dave finds the most satisfying as projects. Working with graphite, charcoal and carbon, attempting to recreate the textures of a painted surface, the reflectivity of chrome, the certain sheen of leather, (or perhaps how rubber will gather light rather than reflect it) with a high level of detail can be severely time consuming. There is constant and never ending attention required to ensure that as a viewer gets closer to his work, the minor details that are lost from a distance come alive up close...the very thing that will set Dave's work apart from most, and the very thing that keeps Dave's work moving forward toward the realm of photo realistic art.

Should you have any interest in Dave's artwork, have questions, or would just like to follow along, feel free to either send a personal email to him or go to his Facebook page at for continued updates and new work as it arrives. All information on our website here.

Auto Art by Tony Upson

This week, we have an amazing artist from the UK.

Born in Kent, England in 1960, Tony's father father was a professional jockey and his mother worked in the veterinary field with horses. She also had an incredible talent for painting miniatures which Tony believes was where his interest in art came from.

He went to art college in Canterbury after school for a three year graphics course. While there he discovered that his passion was for typography and illustration.

Tony moved to London when he was 22 years old, to work in the studio of a large advertising agency, mainly on storyboards and ad layouts.

After a chance meeting he had an offer to try his hand at painting pub signs for a local company back in Kent. His passion for artwork combined with lettering really took off and after ten years he branched out on his own.

This provided him with the opportunity to try different markets. His love of cars combined with portraiture and lettering meant he started to enter paintings into automobilia auctions at the likes of Goodwood and Monaco with Bonhams and Silverstone Auctions.

At the moment he has around five auctions a year mainly across the UK, he also has commissions from valued customers or new enquiries via his website.

"Nothing is more pleasing than to see someone open the garage doors on their prized car collection and find one your paintings on the wall" he quotes.

You can have a look at Tony's website here.

José María de Huarte

This week we have another talented artist from Spain.

Born in Pampalona, Spain in 1962, he has had an interest in painting and drawing since he was child. This led to him enrolling in the School of Arts of Pamplona in 1979.
His father had a fine arts store where José helped in his spare time. He started to get commissions and was very happy earning money doing what he loved.
He credits his teachers for his talent. People such as Juan Jose Aquerreta, Salvador Beunza, Isabel Baquedano andJose Maria Rodriguez Azcárate to name a few.
"I was painting with gouache and watercolors for a long time, but I am actually painting with oils now", José explains. "have been painting landscapes, nature and portraits too, and for the past ten years I have been enjoying painting cars" he continues.
The love of cars is something that seem to run through his family as his father also loved cars who also had a small collection of classic cars. He is always on the look out for another special car to photograph so he can later paint it from his own photos. José likes to paint the front view of cars, although he is happy to do other angles.
He doesn't look at his work as hyper realism although he likes the style. He feels his work is more of a free attitude and a little more simple.
Although he has showed his work in Galería Fermin Echauri, Pampalona in the past few years, he is looking to show them in other countries.
"I love painting cars. I am excited in front of a white canvas, I need this emotional feeling" he concludes.
He works full time as a painter and really enjoys showing and discussing his work with others.

Keep an eye on his work on his Facebook page here and Instagram here.

Below are some of his pieces for you to enjoy. As always respect copyright.

Photomorfosi by Paul David Redfern

Born in Leominster (MASS - USA) in 1958 Paul started with graphic and painting in 1975. He moved to on the digital and computer art in 1990.
In 1991 he organized, in collaboration with the town of Gorizia, an art-exhibition with some italian artist. This led to the first "Photomorfosis" ©(a series of digital photomanipolations) in 1994.
From 1995 to 2007 he organized, in collaboration with the town council of Gorizia, the artistic project entiled "EurArt ". The following year (1996) the first Italian magazine for professional photographers published a part of his Photomorfosi©.
The slovenian Academy of Art in Lubiana invite him to organize a workshop on his Photomorfosi©. In the same year the Italian organization of photography, FIAF, invited him as a rapporteur, at the 17th District FIAF Congress.
The Italian section of the AGFA group organized a very important historical exhibition in Milano for him in 1999. In this occasion AGFA wrote: " ...with his Photomorfosis Redfern remains in the History of the italian photography.."
In October 2007 his video "The earth" received the "We show Award" prize for the best artistic video online. The most important Italian newspapers and magazines wrote same articles on Photomorfosis.
These days his works are usually contained in private and public collections like Isontina State Library, District of Gorizia, AGFA, SatelGroup, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka (Croatia), MOCA museum in New York, etc.
Redfern was also invited to international workshops like Video Film Festival Under 20, International Internet Days, Pixxel Point International digital art, goArtonline, etc ...
Here we have a Critic's writeup on him and his work;
HENRY CASEROTTI (Digication.com) - New York City - Fairfield County
Paul David Redfern is a digital artist who was born in Leominster, Massachusetts in 1958 who currently resides and works in Gorizia, Italy. He states the he “discovered digital and computer art in 1990... and in 1994 created the first Photomorfosis"© which Redfern defines as “a series of digital ‘photomanipulations’”. Since that time he has played and active role in the arts by organizing showings and workshops using his own art as well as working closely with the Graphiti Association which is a group based in Gorizia dedicated to bringing the digital arts to wider audiences. Redfern’s work contains a depth to it not commonly found and is certainly worthy of perusal by a wider audience.
Working with only three tools, an IMac, a digital camera and Adobe Photoshop, Redfern artist creates some very interesting pieces. What makes them interesting comes from two aspects of his art that is more commonly seen in traditional visual media. The first is that Redfern incorporates a tangible sense of texture into many of his pieces. This illusion of surface texture makes it appear that the image has been created on an actual surface, such as wood or stone. Someone viewing the piece can easily imagine that what’s being seen is an actual object rather than a digital creation. This can completely change the viewers perception of the art. After all, an image that is actually a series of 1’s and 0’s is still very much in the realm of idea whereas an image that appears to be a tangible, physical object also gives the allusion of existing in reality.
Secondly, Redfern makes the viewer work to really see what’s happening in his images. It is not always immediately obvious what one is seeing when first looking at his work. Often there are human figures hidden in the compositions that reveal themselves only with a period of observation. In other words, the viewer must dedicate some time to unravel the image. This time spent is incredibly important because it forces the viewer to live, for a while within the world created by the artist, to explore it more fully and possibly feel or understand better what the artist is attempting to express.
What I find most enjoyable about Redfern’s work is the complexity he achieves using digital media. It is the type of work that may only unravel some of it’s deepest secrets over an extended period of time. This is very different from much of the digital art seen today which relies heavily on surrealism or visual puns to relate relatively concrete ideas. Redfern says that he is trying to share his dream world through his art and dreams are not generally straight forward experiences to relate. His works complexity is what put’s Redfern’s art into the category of fine art.

Meanwhile, we have the pleasure of sharing some of Paul's work with you. Always respect copyright.

More of his work can be found on this direct link.

Stephen Oosterling Art

This week we have another talented artist from the USA,

Originally from the Rochester, New York area, Stephen Oosterling was mesmerized by the automotive world at a young age. At the age of 3 or 4, it was stop signs. He drew them all the time.
A lot of boys his age were sports fans: baseball, football and basketball. Steve already knew about Monaco, Indianapolis and Le Mans. He and his brothers played with Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars, Aurora HO slot cars and built plastic car models. He drew cars everywhere he could.
“I drew on the back of my homework. I drew on my class notebooks. My teachers would admonish me and let my Dad know what I was doing. He was a teacher in the school district but he never told me I had to stop. Art classes were an outlet. I could draw cars there and not get in trouble.”
The 70’s were tumultuous in the racing world. Drivers were dying in racing accidents every year. He saw the drivers he looked up to pass away: Swede Savage, Francois Cevert, Peter Revson and Mark Donohue. Motorsports interests waned for a bit.
“I had a school friend who invited me to the U S Grand Prix at Watkins Glen in 1976. The first blur I saw in The Boot was Jochen Mass in the Marlboro McLaren and behind him was Patrick Depailler in the Tyrrell P34 six wheeler…I wanted to be an F1 racer”.
Watkins Glen became a second home for Steve but the desire to race burned inside. It wasn’t until 1988 when he headed to the Spenard-David Racing School in Canada to learn how to drive a racing car on the edge.
“It gave me an appreciation for those who race at the limit. It encompasses all the senses and it’s an adrenaline rush.”
With schooling and a career in graphic design and illustration, job and family took precedence. Steve got his first painting commission in 1994. “ I struck up a conversation with some automotive artists at a Watkins Glen vintage weekend. I decided I really wanted to exhibit and sell my artwork.”
He has been very fortunate to have had some steady commissions since then. In 2012, Steve and his son Alex had the opportunity to create an indoor mural together at the Watkins Glen Chamber of Commerce.
“My artistic goal is to create images that impact the senses in a similar way as they do on the track. It's about the color and the sound but also the craft of the driver to achieve maximum speed at the edge of control.”
Stephen resides with his wife and mother-in-law just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina.
You can visit his website here.
You can also connect with him on Facebook and Instagram.
Below you can enjoy some of Stephen's work. Always respect copyright.
