Daniel Sonzini

This week, another talent from Argentina...

Daniel was born in Buenos Aires in 1960. He attended and finished his studies at Bellas Artes in Prilidiano Pueyrredón College at Buenos Aires. As well as these studies, he has also taken classes to draw as well as paintwork, photography, sculpture and Columbian Art.

"I love car!" comments Daniel, which we all agree! As a publicist he has worked with many manufacturers such as Fiat, Volkswagen, Seat, Toyota and Nissan.

"My favorite race driver is Juan Manuel Fangio, and my favorite car is Porsche 917 because for me it is like “The God of the cars.”" added Daniel, which again we must agree!

His last exhibition was at “Autoclásica Argentina” in 2014 at San Isidro’s hippodrome.

These days, with more time on his hands, he concentrates his time on his hobby which is painting and selling famous cars and motorsport scenes, which he thoroughly enjoys.

Art of Hugo Prado

Born in 1954, Hugo Prado grew up in Miraflores a West Coast surfing suburb of Lima-Peru, South America. His main passion, other than car races and surfing, was drawing.

Hugo's father, Carlos, was a race car driver and responsible for importing vehicles, such as VOLVO's, BMW's, FIAT's, etc. into Peru.
"I was the most popular kid in our neighborhood”, Hugo comments, “since my father Carlos would bring a different car from work everyday".

See Hugo working on the 1931 Duesenberg painting on YOU TUBE by clicking here.

After working as an illustrator in advertising, Hugo realized his life-long dream in 1989, when he decided to leave commercial art to become a full-time automotive artist and founded AutomotiveFineArt.com.

Working in acrylic and watercolors sprayed through the airbrush, Hugo also uses technical pens to bring sharp detail to the final product. His original paintings usually take anywhere from three months to a year to complete. The 1931 Duesenberg and the Dale Earnhardt each took a year to complete.

His work can be seen on MOTORWEEK, and his prints have been sold on TV on QVC and auctioned by "The World Leader of Collector Car Auctioneers " KRUSE INTERNATIONAL.

He has also been showcased in top magazines like CORVETTE FEVER, CORVETTE QUARTERLY, VETTE MAGAZINE, HOT ROD, HEMMINGS MOTORNEWS, OLD CARS WEEKLY. Hugo’s prints have been distributed by AUTOMOBILE QUARTERLY, MID AMERICA DESIGNS, CORVETTE CENTRAL, HEMMINGS MOTORNEWS, THE CHEVROLET CATALOG, DECOR and others. Among Hugo's noted collectors is JAY LENO, of the Tonight Show.

Their “in-house publishing capabilities” allows Hugo to publish his own limited edition Giclees on spectacular 8 color process. Being the artist he can match the color of his original art on all the published prints as no one can. His abilities include the use of a 4" x 5" camera with a BETTERLIGHT digital back to capture the image. He is certified by SCITEX to operate and maintain the IRIS 3000 (A giclee printer). He is also versed in Photoshop which he uses to design and layout the fine art prints and promotional materials. However, all the paintings are done by hand, no computer programs are used in any way.

"As an artist, I understand the meaning of quality and service. I provide my collectors with the best quality, from the original painting all the way to shipping”. This degree of commitment is part of what makes Hugo Prado's limited edition art prints so valuable.

Hugo Prado is available for private and corporate commissions. Galleries and collectors interested in commissions or in purchasing the prints please contact:

Luis Carlos Ferrera

Born in Buenos Aires where he lives today, he studied mechanical technician and then graphic design. As a hobby he started drawing cars in the 70's thanks to a series of articles in the magazine CORSA published by the artist Hector Luis Bergandi, his work was publicized and seen by many readers.

He started using pencils, Rotrings, tempera, then acrylics on paper and canvas.

In 1984 he started to use computers for his profession and now use the two techniques, analog and digital combined.

"Worst of digital art is that "mimic" reality, the best that is "living” art, you can come back again and again even with the passage of time and make the changes you want. The important thing is to know when to say "is over”" commented Luis.

An example of the above is his artwork Tyrrell F1 which he started in 1973, in tempera, then digitized in 2004 and finally he finished it in 2010, yes! 37 years later.

"I don't use digital effects, just use the computer as a tool and try to work just like with brushes", added Luis.

In recent years he has tried to develop a style less detailed and more plastic to transmit the essence of race cars; the speed.

Luis works as a graphic designer in Buenos Aires.

Christian Doyle Art

Christian’s interest for art and cars began at a young age, memories of going to car events such as Silverstone with his Dad in a classic sports car ever since he was little, all the great sights and smells have had a lasting impression which has grown up into a passion. Coupled with his flair for art, this passion has culminated in gaining a Fine art degree at The University of Northampton in 2012.

He works in a mostly representational style, and aims for a realist impression of how he sees it, using colour, contrast and composition to try and capture a moment.

He loves how the car as an object interacts with its surroundings, using aspects of reflection and perspective. He looks at where they are located and how their location relates to them, literally and symbolically, and likes to work from real scenes.

‘’I am interested in the ways light can strike the shapes and angles of a cars exterior, providing interesting patterns and lines of colours and shades, as well as distorting, altering and enhancing the cars original colours and lines. I use photography to capture these moments of light, from which I create my work’’ explains Christian.

A passion of cars is strong, he runs a classic car every day, maintaining and enjoying them all year round, being an active car enthusiast and attending various automotive events throughout the year, exhibiting his work from the car, enjoying, experiencing and being involved in the classic and vintage scenes.

"I like my artwork to be representational of the everyday car enthusiast like myself, and my works include vehicles from dragsters to stock cars, from vintage show cars to the everyday enthusiasts pride and joy" he added.

His works have been exhibited in various locations in the UK, mainly in Cambridgeshire, but also at Silverstone and in London.  He has also enjoyed his work being  privately exhibited with many enthusiasts in the UK & Ireland as well as internationally in France, Germany and the USA.

Why not look him up on his website here.

Leonardo Castilho

Leonardo Castilho is 35 years old and from a very well know town in Brazil by the name of São Paulo. You may well recognize this name as there are a few of our heroes who also come from the same place. Names such as Emerson FittipaldiRubens Barrichello and Ayrton Senna to mention a few.

After trying some jobs in the market which he did not enjoy he realized that he was suffering with depression and insomnia. In this terrible time he saw an episode of Overhaulin which really inspired him, as he already was interested in cars and did go to the race track often. Well, you can't be from São Paulo and not be interested in racing can you?

He started to draw, not so good at first, but carried on trying and trying, just on paper with a pencil. "It suited me and made me feel good" mentions Leonardo, "I wasn't sleeping anyway".

This carried on and he got better at what he was beginning to really enjoy and to his surprise he was given a commission and that was the turning point. He got serious about his art. He studied, graduated and kept going. Meeting Chip Foose along the way was another huge inspiration and he learnt a lot from the experience.

Leonardo now works as a consultant working on several projects.

"I treat the profession with love, unlike passion, passion leaves us a little blind" he commented.

You can get in touch, follow and consult him for commission etc.

Gabriel Moreno

Gabriel Moreno is just 25 years old and as you can see from his work he has been drawing for a long time. In fact, he got started when he was just a child.

"I started drawing all kind of motorsports, influenced by Retro Racing Magazines of my country", explains Gabriel.

He was very interested in the black and white pictures of Indy 500 and Formula 1, so he continued with his favorite technique, which is the coloured pencils. He gradually started to develop his own technique based in realistic artworks.

He just drew the race cars from up close angles, no landscapes. At the age of 16, he did some of his first colour drawings and only last year in 2014, he receive his first commission. It seems a long time ago as he has since sold more than 40 original drawings, all from Formula 1 to Le Mans Sportcars, also including '"Turismo Carretera", the most popular racing in Argentina.

A few months ago he met ex- Formula 1 driver Oscar "Poppy" Larrauri, a great Argentinian driver who lives in his city, "he signed my 24 Hours of Le Mans Porsche 962C work" commented Gabriel.

His work was also recognized and appreciated by another international driver, Jorge Cupeiro who now has one of Gabriel's pieces to cherish. Jorge Cupeiro is a well know Argentinian driver from Buenos Aires who had a good career during the 60's and the 70's.

His favorite method is still the pencils, match colours and techniques like pastel chalks, details in acrylic paint, etc.

He is currently working on several commissions, drawing all kinds of racing around the world, DTM, Le Mans, Formula 1, Nascar and rally.

"My idols are Nigel MansellGilles VilleneuveMika Hakkinen and of course '"The Master" Juan Manuel Fangio" concluded Gabriel.

You can follow him on Facebook here.

Alex Wakefield

Another talented artist from the USA with an eye for motorsport. Alex Wakefield is our featured artist this week.

Alex Wakefield is a motorsport artist and enthusiast. As a little kid growing up in Iowa, he’d always been fascinated by machinery, the pre-race build up and the stories of how those great races happened.

"I like to give my own interpretation on how I see a given period in racing that I find interesting- a more colorful, emotional piece or a precise technical exercise to help convey my visual story", comments Alex.

He does not feel like that he needs to be pinned to one style, as he likes the freedom of portraying motorsport in different ways.

"I want to show motor sport from my viewpoint. I want to take the viewer on a colorful, exciting ride into a sport I’m passionate about. If it’s something that you, the viewer, are moved and inspired by, then all the better".

You can keep in touch with Alex via Facebook here.

His website Motor Art 27 can be reached here.

As always, we have the pleasure of sharing some of the artist's work with you below. Please respect copyright.

STEPHAN und VERENA

A different feature this week as we feature not one but two artists. Stephan and Verena are a couple from Germany who have been travelling all over Europe in the name of art for the past 20 years.

While studying at university, "STEPHANundVERENA" as they are known as, met and began to co-organize their own art exhibitions. In the beginning, the artist couple showed only paintings and graphics, until they realized that their audience wanted more...more with which they could identify. For this reason, the two artists began to create unique environments with materials fitting the theme of each installation, leading, in a dedicated manner, to the point of the exhibition.Since then, they have created about 30 projects, each lasting from 3 months to a half year in duration. These very special and versatile art projects most often take place in abandoned, empty standing buildings, where all of their work is created onsite with their own modern installations, including video and special illuminations.STEPHANundVERENA only bring tools, technical equipment, and empty frames with them. All installations and paintings are created once they are on location, according to the theme which always showcases the building itself or its surrounding environment. In ancient German castles, the artists have worked on themes like “The Plague“ or “Witch hunts“; in medieval villages of Croatia or Italy, they've created outdoor installations, using only materials found at each site. Further, the team has also worked in such unique settings as a functioning hospital, a boarding school with live-in kids, and a convent based on input from monks. Each project is a new challenge for the 45 year old couple. One of these challenges was the painting of Formula One cars in 2001. Always interested in motorsports, STEPHANundVERENA had their temporary art studio in a castle near the famous Nürburgring in Germany at this time. And because everybody in this region was somehow involved in the racing events, they were able to make connections with the locals and finally organized a couple of exhibitions on the racetracks themselves and in nearby facilities and hotels during the weekends of Luxembourg's Grand Prix at the Nürburgring and Germany's Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring. The most interesting thing for STEPHANundVERENA was when they had the chance to come into really close contact with the team principals of Mercedes and BMW over the racing weekends, having the opportunity to chat with some of the drivers. It was also a great experience for the artists to hear the sounds of the cars' engines and to touch and see the very same cars they had painted before in their studio on canvas. For the German TV reports from the Nürbunrgring, the paintings hung decoratively in the TV studio in the BMW hall. Invited guests included Formula One insiders like Gerhard Berger, Hans Joachim Stuck, Norbert Haug, and Mario Theissen. Alternatively, at the Hockenheimring, the artists hung their paintings in the hotel, where the Jaguar and Jordan teams, and Pedro de la Rosa and Eddie Ervine, were staying. The art projects of STEPHANundVERENA are always a great experience for both the creators and the visitors. Some of the F1-pictures have been sold, while the others are stored at Tom‘s Attic in Germany, close to the Nürburgring .If anyone knows of a dynamic space, use, or location for this unique work, where it can be viewed and enjoyed by the public, suggestions and demands are always welcome.
The exhibitions with the Formula One pictures are documented on the artists' website here.
Below you can enjoy some of their work and do get in contact with them if you have any suggestions or would like to organize an exhibition.

Ken Morris Jr

This week we have a very talented photographer and digital artist from Canada. Ken Morris Jr was born in Halifax, Nove Scotia in the 1950's. His keen interest in drawing and cars has led him to choose this line of work for many years now.Ken mentioned that; "My Mom told me one of the very first things I drew as a toddler was cars".Since he was very young he was building plastic car model kits from various manufacturers such as AMT, Revell and Johan. His favorite of all these cars were the 1930's to 1960's hot rods and American cars. He also experimented by swapping parts from one car to other to create something unique. His love of cars also led him to purchase a 1960 Corvette in 1983 which at one time in its past life was a drag car. With help from his father and brother, he restored the car to itrs former glory and still owns the car today. Who can blame him for that!He is a self taught photographer and digital artist."In my digital illustrations I will sometimes draw the images on my computer using a Wacom tablet and ArtRage which is a digital painting app as well as Photoshop. I also dabble in 3D modeling and rendering apps" Explained Ken.As he is such a fan, he frequent many local car shows in the summer with his 1960 Corvette, taking photos of the many local hot rods & cars with his digital SLR cameras. Also, we need to tell you that he is a life long fan of the NHL's St Louis Blues hockey team.More about Ken and his work here. His Zenfolio profile can be seen here. You can connect and follow him on Facebook here.Below you can enjoy just a sample of Ken's work.
